An official statement from the SOPHIE’s label, Transgressive, confirmed that the producer’s death was a result of an accident that took place in Athens in the early hours of Saturday morning (30th January).

The Glasgow-born artist was renowned as a groundbreaking producer in the electronic and pop fields, pioneering a new and experimental sound for pop music and was known for collaborations with the likes of Madonna, Charlie XCX, and Vince Staples.

Back in 2018, SOPHIE’s debut album, Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Inside, was nominated at the Grammys in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category

As well as being a pioneer musically, SOPHIE was also an inspirational icon to a generation of young LGBTQ+ individuals. The producer often incorporated the theme of gender identity while creating music, employing techniques such as vocal modulation to explore the concept. In an interview with Billboard in 2018, SOPHIE said:

“Transness is taking control to bring your body more in line with your soul and spirit so the two aren’t fighting against each other and struggling to survive. On this earth, it’s that you can get closer to how you feel your true essence is without the societal pressures of having to fulfil certain traditional roles based on gender.”, as reported by Mixmag.

The producer’s label Transgressive broke news on their Twitter feed at midday on Saturday, making the following statement:

“Tragically our beautiful Sophie passed away this morning after a terrible accident. True to her spirituality, she had climbed up to watch the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell. She will always be here with us. The family thanks everyone for their love and support and request privacy at this devastating time.”

Since the news broke on Saturday, tributes have been flying in from across the globe complimenting the artist’s talent, vision, and kind-hearted nature.

Nile Rodgers shared an image of them on his Twitter saying:

“#RestInPower SOPHIE! You were one of the most innovative, dynamic, and warm persons I had the pleasure of working with.”

Sam Smith also shared his condolences for the loss:

“Heartbreaking news. The world has lost an angel. A true visionary and icon of our generation. Your light will continue to inspire so many of our generations to come. Thinking of Sophie’s family and friends at this hard time”

Tributes were also paid by several other artists, labels, and industry professionals that had been blessed with the experience of working with SOPHIE.

At the tender age of 34, there is no disputing that an incredible talent has been taken all too soon, leaving many devastated at the loss both musically and personally. SOPHIE leaves behind an incredible legacy in the work that the artist has done over the years and there is no doubt that a lasting mark that will influence generations to come has been left in the producer’s place.
