For some, it would be a dream to meet their musical idol. Ryan Caraveo hit the ultimate stroke of luck when he not only met his idol, but became instant friends with him. Superstar DJ Steve Aoki took Caraveo under his wing after hearing his music, and his knack for seeking out fresh talent served him well. Caraveo is now a major power player in the music scene himself, and released his latest album Northend Sweetheart in July 2021. The 14-track record marks his fifth studio album, and it captivates from start to finish.
Caraveo’s music is special in the way it can’t be boxed into one particular genre, but it will appeal most to emo rock and hip hop fans. Following the release of Northend Sweetheart, he called the album “a bit manic, honest and deceptively sad,” but promised it’s a series of authentic stories of what he’s going through in real life.
“Usually if I’m writing some shit these days to get it off of my chest or it’s something I’m going through mentally,” Caraveo said. “I like to put a happy guitar under it and make a kind of a happy singalong melody but if you read the lyrics, it’s not that at all. So yeah, deceptively sad that is the cherry on top.”
Caraveo’s record is nostalgic and progressive all at once, incorporating elements of pop-punk with smooth rap verses and pop sensibilities. His undeniably eclectic sound probably comes from the fact he’s had a lot of life experience to found his music career upon. After moving around a lot as a child, he began opening up for local rap shows in Seattle before eventually making his way to California. He’s since built himself a loyal following and even linked up with Aoki to release a track. Caraveo was featured on Aoki’s reimagination of the Avril Lavigne smash hit, “Complicated”.
