Review | Dictator – Hide and Seek (Liam Doc Edit)

DJ and producer Liam Doc teams up with Scottish four piece Dictator on a mix of their recent single ‘Hide and Seek.’ Out now.

Originally released back in May 2021, Dictator’s ‘Hide and Seek’ is a raw, evocative track. Its vulnerability, crystal clear production and dark, atmospheric undertones made it an immediate charm with the band’s loyal following and even caught the attention of airwave giants Radio X. To give DJ/producer Liam Doc such a powerful indie ballad and transform it into a rave-ready edit, is a very exciting opportunity to flex some creativity in the studio.

Doc, already an established figure in Scotland’s electronic music scene, is known for eclectic mixes and boundary-defying selections. His live energy as a DJ rightly secured him residency at Glasgow’s renowned venue SubClub as well as party purveyors FLY. Rinse FM, Boiler Room TV and FLY Open Air are just a few more of the industry heavyweights who have jumped onboard Doc’s ever growing momentum. As a producer, Doc boasts a fine selection of electronic releases as well as founding independent record label Eyeangle. It’s all of the above and more that saw the Scot nominated for DJ Mag’s Best of British awards 2020 for Best Breakthrough Producer.

With that in mind, under Doc’s influence how would ‘Hide and Seek’ transform from a guitar-lead ballad to club mix?

Staying true to the original recording, Doc takes the dark, evocative soundscape and surges it into a new high-intensity energy with a sharp breakbeat and deep bass. It has a real gritty, underground rave feel. Distorted samples of lead singer Michael Cameron’s vocals echo in and out of the foreground, summoning a sense of euphoria onto the dancefloor. Hitting a sudden halt, Cameron’s vocal chorus bellows in solitude. The kind of bridge that brings a sea of warehouse ravers to a slow sway before Doc inflicts the bouncing breakbeat and high energy back onto the crowd.

Doc commented on the collaboration and upcoming release: “I’ve known the guys in Dictator for years through playing locally in bands in Livingston, I’ve loved producing their recent tracks and when they asked for a remix I was buzzing to put something together. I’ve given the remix of “hide and seek” an injection of UK club culture pulling influence from what I play in my DJ sets. The breakbeat with Michael’s vocal sampled over the top of it and a sub bass underneath felt so right – a proper speaker shaking combo.”

Paired with bespoke single artwork designed by Calum Wilson, member of Scottish band The Snuts, it’s fair to say that there’s a lot of excitement behind this release.

You can now give Liam Doc’s remix of Hide and Seek by Dictator a listen on Spotify and Apple Music. Why not give the original a spin whilst you’re there and compare versions. Listen here.
