Since its 1992 origin, the MTV Movie and TV awards has become an annual affair and is THE event that kick-starts the film industry’s award season. The award show is split up into two parts- scripted and unscripted (reality) TV. Vanessa Anne Hudgens hosted the first part of the show and Tayshia Adams hosted the second half. How it works; the nominations are solely chosen by the execs and producers at MTV. Then the plebs (public) will vote for who they think should be honoured with the coveted “Golden Popcorn” statue which democratises the process a little bit. Us commoners get a bit of a say so in voting for what TV we enjoy consuming (unlike the Oscars).
Highschool musical’s very own Vanessa Anne Hudgens was an excellent choice and she truly sparkled in her role. On the red carpet, she regally demanded attention with her dazzling custom Cobalt Blue Vera Wang chiffon dress. Proving she was the star of the night, she went onto have two more outfit changes. She had a cute Versace mini bralette top and mini skirt moment and then ended the night with a Bright Pink Valentino dress from the 2022 collection. She showed up 100% ready.
The most nominations for the first segment of the show went to Jon Watts ‘Spiderman- No way Home’, Matt Reeves ‘The Batman’ and unsurprisingly, Sam Levinson’s HBO hit- ‘Euphoria’. It was a good night for Hollywood’s new it couple Zendaya and Tom Holland as their respective roles in Spiderman and Euphoria collectively ran the award shows. Tom Holland won best performance in a movie for his role in Spiderman and Zendaya won best performance in a show for her role as Euphoria’s Rue. It was a good night for the cast of Spiderman and Euphoria as the former scooped up another award for best movie picture. Euphoria went on to win three more awards in the categories of best show, best fight and for the ‘Here for the hookup award.’
I was personally surprised at the cast of the batman (in my opinion) being snubbed as it was arguably one of the best films to come out in 2022. Other notable winners were the cast of Loki who managed to score two golden popcorn statues. Similarly, Jennifer Lopez once again showed us that she truly is that girl! She stepped out in a leather black Monet dress which hugged and accentuated her beautiful figure. She was dressed to impress – it was like she knew she was going to win the award for best song; and she did! She secured the coveted golden popcorn for her performance of ‘on my way’ from the movie Marry me!
The Bachelorette’s very own Tayshia Adam also wowed in her hosting duties. Winners included ‘The Tonight show” staring Jimmy Fallon for the best topical/talk show. Of course, Rupaul Drag race won the award for the best reality TV fight- apart from his fracking scandal, you cannot deny that Rupaul knows how to create one hell of a show. American Idol’s very own- ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger‘- Kelly Clarkson obtained the award for best TV host. Good 4 u‘s very own Olivia Rodrigo’s music documentary was voted as 2022’s favourite. She beat Coodie and Chike’s ‘Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye trilogy’ and queen Janet Jackson’s lifetime autobiographic series. The 19 year old went toe to toe with America’s greatest superstars for the golden popcorn award and for that alone, she more than earned her win. The highlight for me however was seeing Paris Hilton being given her flowers as she was given an award for the ‘best reality tv return.’ About time, as she has been blessing us with a substantial amount of enigmatic content in the last two decades. Stars are blind is an eternal bop and that is a hill I will forever die on.
